Abstract:

In the silver industry, copper is one of the metal that’s mixed with silver to produce a mixture of metal that it’s harder and stronger than pure silver itself. The silver industry produce jewelry, accessories, and also a lot of liquid waste containing copper metal. Copper is a heavy metals and toxic. So the liquid waste must be processed first to reduce the cooper content.
This research aims to decrease the copper content in the waste liquid by using a presipitation method with sodium hydroxide solution as precipitant. This investigation studies the effect of concentration of sodium hydroxide toward the copper content in the waste liquid and the effect of the precipitation time toward the volume of precipitate. Firstly, reagent (NaOH) with a certain concentration added to the liquid waste that has been known the copper content, and then stirred with a speed of 50 rpm for 15 minutes. After a certain time we obtain a precipitate and a liquid. The liquid is taken and analyzed using spectrophotometer to determine the copper content.
The results of this research show that the presipitation method using a sodium hydroxide solution can reduce copper content in the waste liquid of the silver industry. Optimum results are achieved at the addition of 20 mL NaOH 9% for the sample of 250 mL of liquid waste with the copper reduction rate up to 95.47%, and copper content can be derived from a 14.35 ppm to 0.65 ppm. This copper content almost reaches the level of quality standard liquid waste, which is equal to 0.6 ppm. The effect of precipitation time toward the settling volume shows that the rate of the overall volume of precipitation process is 0.028125 mL/min.
