Abstract:

Present, cooling technique in manufacturing proccess is developed with minimum quantity lubrication (MQL), where 50-500 ml/hour lubricant is sprayed into the side of the contact between a cutting tool and a workpiece. The existence of lubricant can reduce the friction force between a tool and a workpiece, so the tool life can be extended. The aim of this research is to introduce the minimum lubricant technique by droplets methods.
This research was done using four methods: wet, dry, MQL, and droplet. Esther oil used for lubricant. The experiment for this research also used Cyclone Denford CNC lathe machine with PLANSEE TIZIT DCMT 11T304 EN-SM inserts carbide. The nozzle was directed on flank side of cutting tool. During machining process, flank wear image was captured frequently. Machining process was stopped when flank wear achieved 0.3 mm.
The result shows that the droplet method is increasing the tool life and decreasing surface roughness of a workpiece than wet or dry method. However, tool life by droplet method is still below than MQL method, but this method is simpler because there is no air pressurized.
