Abstract:

Lathe process is a cutting movement between rotational movement of workpiece and transalation movement of cutting tool. Good cutting tool should have good property that able to produce good quality of lathe processing,such as : smooth surface, hardly wear of cutting tool and relatively inexpensive.
The aim of this research is to obtain good quality of lathe cutting tool with inexpensive price. The spesiments used this work welded hardening carbon steel surface with electrode NSN 312-16, HV 600, RD 7188, old miser and High Speed Steel (HSS).
It was found that the hardness value for welded hardening construksion steel surface with electrode NSN 312-16, HV 600, RD 718, old miser and High Speed Steel (HSS) cutting tool were 40, 55,7,40, 57,8 and 79,2 HRc and wearing rate of cutting speed after aluminium cutting were 0,003, 00019, 0,0034, 0,0009 gram recpectively. Surface smoothness of work piece were 3,965, 3,093, 3,417, 1,759 and 2,092 μm for welded hardening carbon steel surface with electrode NSN 312-16, HV 600, RD 718, old miser and High Speed steel (HSS) cutting tool respectively. The scrap produced continuous chip for each specimen tool.
For cutting aluminium, the rank based on the quality was HV 600, old miser and then HSS.This is because according to DIN wich hardness rank produce for each cutting tool with welding N8, meanwhile for both old miser and HSS were N7.
