Biodiesel is a fuel source alternative to diesel fuel made from vegetable oils or animal fats, contain no sulfur and no aromatic. Biodiesel is produced by reacting vegetable oils with alcohols using alkaline substances as catalysts in the temperature and composition. In this study used coconut oil (jelantah) processed through two stages of reactions, esterification and transesterification. Esterification stage is to reduce levels of free fatty acids in the oil. Esterification of oil with methanol and a catalyst H2SO4, heated at a temperature of 60 º C with a time of 30 minutes. The results of esterification , reacted with methanol and a catalyst KOH at room temperature, the reaction is the transesterification.
Reaction kinetics of biodiesel production from coconut oil used (jelantah) and methanol with KOH catalyst is a second order reaction. By using 100 mL of oil and 126.5 mL of methanol and 1.5 grams of catalyst works at room temperature and atmospheric pressure is obtained optimum results the reaction rate constants to the right (k 1) for 3,49.10 -4, the reaction rate constants to the left ( k 2) for 1,89.10 -4 and the value of the reaction equilibrium constant (K) of 1.85 with the equilibrium conversion of 80.28%.
